New China strategies from global think-tanks to managers

Free webinar with Gabor Holch

Multinational executives doing business in or with China must accept two unwelcome facts, and build their strategies accordingly. One is that while globalisation is far from dying, it is entering a new, more cautious phase. Another is that ‘business as usual’, ‘the good old days’ or whatever we can call pre-pandemic global business is not returning. China and its main trading partners have reshuffled their priorities, and corporate decision-makers must do the same.

Of course, shuffling changing priorities while aiming at moving targets can be confusing, especially while managers must also rewrite their suddenly outdated leadership handbooks. China-facing businesspeople seldom have the chance to stop and think about the deeper implications of recent changes. In response, Global think-tanks like Roland Berger, McKinsey and the Mercator Institute publish recommendations for new China strategies based on enormous pools of data and tested strategic models.

In this East-West Leadership webinar we look at a few such recommendations and discuss which ones are the most suitable for specific sectors, industries, business models, leadership and corporate cultures and importantly, personal styles and temperaments of the leaders themselves, whether they do business with China from abroad, as expat executives or as local leaders promoted to international roles at multinational firms. Intercultural Leadership Consultant Gabor Holch and participants exchange experiences, discuss specific cases and suggest ways forward. Some discussion topics:

  • How did changes in China's investment, employment, leadership, legal, digital & market environment impact foreign firms?
  • How can 'decoupling', diversification and deeper commitment to China play roles even in the same strategy?
  • What new opportunities emerge if leaders maintain a constructive approach to changes in China?
